Present in our Exile

November 21, 2021 | by Pastor Peter

When we experience sorrow, grief or disappointment, it’s easy to believe God has abandoned us. The Babylonian Exile was that kind of experience for God’s people. God allowed the Babylonians to take his people as slaves in a foreign land (the undoing of the Exodus) as a consequence of their sin. But, in fact, God was present in their exile. Our own experiences are like an exile. As citizens of heaven, we can feel like foreigners where we live. Our world is that way it is because of human sinfulness. But in our exile, we can still see God with us. He is present with us.

Knowing God is present with us changes how we interpret our disappointment. God doesn’t abandon his people in their sin, rather he pursues them in spite of it.
