Spiritual Warfare

March 29, 2020 | by

In the last few weeks, our lives have changed in ways none of us could have anticipated. when 2020 began COVID-19 was a blip on the radar in China. Yet a few months later, we’re dealing with both a global pandemic and an economic crash. These are uncharted waters for most of us. Forces that seem so completely out of our control seem to have swept up our lives. We can feel helpless about our ability to fight back. But we Paul discusses how we do have tools to fight a relevant battle today: the battle of Spiritual Warfare.

In the last in our sermon series on the letter to the Ephesians, (Ephesians 6:10-20) we look at how the church fights battles. While we are ill-equipped to do battle with a virus, God has given us every tool necessary to make war in the Spiritual realm against the works of the enemies, (global pandemics among them, I believe). We need not be physically strong or skilled with a sword. Instead, God calls us to enter into his battle with evil, doing so by living a life modelled after the victorious divine warrior, Jesus, the Messianic King.

Our struggle isn’t against human enemies who look down on us or mistreat us. Spiritual warfare assails the spiritual forces that deceive and enslave such people. This is why our battle will always look different than a superhero or war movie. We follow the lead of Jesus, the crucified and risen who shows us the real pattern of a hero.

Questions for Reflection

  2. What pieces of the armour do I find most difficult to put on? Why is that?
  3. Do I feel that I am a prayer warrior? What is stopping me from becoming one?
