Faith In Action – James 1:21-25

October 18, 2020 | by

It’s not enough to be experts on the Bible or Theology. James reminds us that real Christian faith translates into action. While it’s true that Jesus saves those who believe, that belief changes everything. In James 1:21-25, Jesus’ brother tells us what we often forget: Faith needs to be expressed in action. A changed life is a test to see whether faith is genuine or just a put on.

When Christians look into the ‘perfect law that gives freedom’ they’re meant to see Jesus. In this mirror we don’t see ourselves as we are, but as we were meant to be. The mirror shows God’s intent. It implies how we fall short. So it challenges us to live differently, to live as if we are Jesus in a whole new set of circumstances. That’s what faith in action means. When we tell people we are Christians do they see a life that shows faith in action?

Questions for Reflection

  1. How do I determine whether something is morally good or not?
  2. Do my religious beliefs change my behaviour in any way?
  3. In what ways do I imagine Jesus would be different than I am if he were living in my life?
