The Bond of Unity

February 23, 2020 | by

The church is very good at tearing itself apart. For this reason, In Ephesians 4:1-16, Paul lays out ways believers can maintain the bond of unity. First, he instructs believers to cultivate humility, gentleness and patience with each other. If they do, then they can be uniters not dividers. Next, believers should recognize that unity does not require uniformity. since diversity in the church is baked into its DNA, and isn’t a problem we must solve.

Once we realize this we can see the point of diversity. Believers’ differences allow them to build each other up. So diversity paradoxically helps maintain the bond of unity. Since we all have a unique contribution to make, we are all responsible to help the church grow to maturity. Only as we each play our God-given role, can the church properly reflect God to the people around it.

Questions For Reflection

  1. In what ways are humility, meekness and patience important to building up a community?
  2. Do I find diversity in the church uncomfortable? If so, why?
  3. Since diversity is important, what giftings do you see in yourself, and others in your congregation? – How are you using them, or how could you?
