Human wisdom seeks what’s good in our own eyes, which leads us to interpret right and wrong in a self-interested way. The result is that people with power get what they want, and people without do not. The logical conclusion of this is empire, where one person gets what they want, and everyone else becomes a cog in the machine of meeting the ruler’s desires.

God’s wisdom functions differently. The powerful (Jesus) gives himself for the powerless. While this seems like a losing strategy, it’s proven wise by the resurrection. The church, then, is the community that is called to embody this new wisdom, following Jesus’ example by seeking the lowest place, by fostering unity and by living as a critique of the wisdom of the world.
