Not by Bread Alone

February 26, 2023 | by Pastor Peter

After Jesus has fasted for 40 days in the wilderness, Satan tempts him to turn stones into bread. Why would it be wrong for Jesus to indulge?

First, Jesus would be acting as though physical needs were the only needs that we have that are important. Second, by taking matters into his own hands, Jesus would show us that we can’t trust the Father to meet all of our needs. Finally, Jesus would give up on his calling. He could produce enough bread for himself and for the hungry masses. They would think of him as a saviour. But while the salvation he would be offering might save some from starving, it wouldn’t save anyone from the power of sin or death. Satan is tempting Jesus to take the easy way and be a pseudo-saviour rather than paying the costs necessary to save our souls.

We can learn a lot about relying on God from Jesus’ example
