The church starts out with a promise that Jesus will return on some unknown day in the future. Jesus doesn’t tell them when that will be, but says that in the meantime, they must be his witnesses to people everywhere. But two thousand years later, Jesus hasn’t returned.

Some people seek to prove he’ll come back on specific times or dates, but such predictions miss the point. Jesus intends his followers to live with a sense of urgency that comes from the conviction that he might return at any moment. Christians are meant to live as a community whose life shows what God’s rule, his promised age to come, will look like in the midst of this present age, while patiently waiting for the Lord’s return.
