Mary and Joseph endure a travel nightmare and end up having baby Jesus in a stable so that Jesus can inhabit the lowest place because the lowest place is the only place everyone can access. This way Jesus can be a Savior for Everyone.

Jesus shows us God’s hospitality by taking on flesh. He calls together the church, a new, boundary-breaking family. But we often celebrate this act of inclusion by excluding everyone who isn’t immediate family. Perhaps this isn’t the best way to celebrate Christmas. Celebrating Christmas as God does means being present to those who don’t have a family or are excluded.

So this season we have an opportunity to find the Marys and Josephs in our lives and do for them what God does for us in the incarnation–to be present with us.
