Between Two Resurrections

April 17, 2022 | by Pastor Peter

Jesus raises Lazarus to a new, mortal life. The Father raises Jesus to a new, immortal life. These two resurrections provide a framework for understanding the Christian hope. When we come to faith in Jesus, we are no longer spiritually dead, but the vestiges of death (symbolized by the graveclothes in Lazarus’ resurrection) are still with us. We struggle to do what is right, and our bodies are still subject to weakness, sickness and death. But Jesus’ resurrection prefigures the resurrection of those who belong to Jesus at the time of his return. Just as Jesus is raised immortal and incorruptible, so shall we be by God’s grace. This new life now and resurrected life later is available to any who can admit their inability to save themselves, but who can admit their need to God, and to trust in his love and power to raise them. So if we have come to faith in Christ, we have a new life. But this life is not yet the life we ultimately hope, because we live between two resurrections
