In asking Abraham to sacrifice Isaac and then stopping him, God isn’t trying to torture Abraham but to show him he’s not like the other gods Abraham has worshipped. God reveals himself to us in a way that is countercultural, but we have to choose to see him as he reveals himself, not as our culture trains us to think about him, or else he might need to resort to similarly difficult ways of undercutting our idolatrous misunderstandings about who he is.
