Even Jesus’ closest followers have a hard time of getting their heads around his vision of what it means to be Messiah. They think they’re following a conquering king, but instead, he tells them he’s going to Jerusalem to die, and that his disciples need to pick up their crosses and follow.

To follow Jesus requires a radical redefinition of success. We’re not winning when we gain power or influence (particularly when we disobey his commands to achieve it) but rather when we let God win the victory and our lives become a living testimony to the victory God has achieved. Victorious living, then, looks much different than we might suppose.
