Christians can often pride themselves on avoiding the sin of idolatry, but they can easily indulge in self-serving piety that is idolatrous. Salvation is a free gift from God, not a benefit God gives us in order to wring acts of piety from us. So piety offered as payment for God’s saving work insults the gift God has given to us. What is the point of piety then? Piety is about what God wants to give to us, instead of what he can get from us. Piety puts us in a posture to receive from God, to know God. Piety is only beneficial to us when it directs to to be attentive to God’s presence so that we may know him.
