The temptation of Idolatry

The Temptation of Idolatry

July 9, 2023 | by Pastor Peter

It would be easy to believe as modern Westerners that we’re not subject to the temptation of idolatry. We don’t bow down to little statues, but we do seek ultimate fulfillment from things that are created rather than from our creator. This is idolatry.

God opposes idolatry because he loves us and wants what is best for us. The problem is that Idols can’t do what we need them to do. Only he is capable of being our source of life, while all other things will collapse under the weight of our expectations.

Our culture encourages us to look to many different things as the place where we can get our ultimate meaning: romance, money, accomplishments or even distraction. These may be good things, but they can’t be central in our lives. If we make them such, they will betray our expectations like a broken cistern will imperceptibly squander life-giving water.

So we must understand that the temptation of idolatry is an invitation to disappointment.
